Overview & Projections

Dry van tender rejection rates are currently rising compared to this time last year, nearly reaching 7.5%. Industry forecasts suggest that rates are likely to peak this week before gradually declining as the month progresses.

According to the FMCSA, operating authorities experienced nearly a 50% surge between June 2020 and July 2022. However, since that time, there has been a 12% decline in operating authorities. While excess capacity continues to exit the market, it remains an indicator of ample availability within the van market. After the Fourth of July holiday, the market is anticipated to ease until the fall season.

Several markets are expected to tighten this week, with California, Texas, and the Southeast being identified as the most volatile regions. Additional caution is recommended in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. All other areas are projected to maintain favorable to stable conditions.

Arizona

Outside of the Southwest, the area is positive. Southwestern parts, won't be as volatile as Southern California.

California (Northern)

Expect rates to rise, especially near Central California. Northern California will be the more promising market within the state.

California (Southern)

Conditions are remaining moderately tight to limited. Above average rates will occur until the
holiday passes.

Carolinas

South Carolina and Western North Carolina are limited. Outbound shipments are rising &
hindering capacity.

Eastern United States

The East Coast is struggling to maintain coverage this week. Pennsylvania is also tightening. Local shipments costs will heighten.

Florida (Northern)

Some potential relief in Northern Florida
and Southern Georgia early to mid week.
Will not last as the weekend approaches.

Florida (Southern)

Coverage is maintaining a neutral status. After this week availability will be more plentiful.

Georgia

Some potential relief in Northern Florida
and Southern Georgia early to mid week.
Will not last as the weekend approaches.

Idaho

Area isn’t forecasted to shift. Carrier availability outweighs volumes. No concerns here.

Midwest

Ohio, is the most demanding area within the region. Indiana is consistent with last week. Western MI may shift slightly.

New York

Favorable freight rates are constant. No real shift until apple volumes rise.

Washington/Oregon

Only potential shift is in Western
Washington and Northwest Oregon late in the
week. Dependability is prevalent.

Texas

Consistently tighter coverage in Dallas and Houston. South Texas near McAllen is improving. Austin and Western Texas are favorable.
