EFS Refrigerated Freight Report

Overview & Projections

Reefer tender rejection levels have climbed above 15%, signaling tightening capacity in the market. Spot rates are up over 6% compared to last year, while contract rates have increased by 3.5% year over year. Despite tender volumes dropping 19% annually, both spot rates and rejection rates continue to rise, indicating that capacity is exiting the market faster than demand is declining.

The Diwali Holiday has had less impact on California than expected, which bodes well for coverage this week. As transition season unfolds across Central California, maintaining proper temperatures is critical due to weakening product quality. Meanwhile, fluctuations persist across the Midwest and Pacific Northwest, with Minnesota experiencing the most recent shift that will likely affect surrounding states as well.

Arizona

Area isn’t too demanding just yet. Mirroring the SoCal area, stability is present.

California (Northern)

Be wary of product quality issues as produce levels diminish. Carriers will begin to follow produce shipments south.

California (Southern)

Stability is present & beneficial to the spot market. As produce volumes rise, so will carrier costs.

Carolinas

Southern Georgia is affecting South Carolina capacity. Expect similar rates. North Carolina is the better area to secure trucks.

Eastern United States

Consistently higher rates east of Pittsburgh. Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and New Jersey markets will take more effort. The Northeast is stable.

Florida (Northern)

Florida continues to shift. Central & Northern Florida will become challenging later in the week. Southern Georgia is trending the same.

Florida (Southern)

Market is showing signs of maintaining its slightly tight conditions.

Georgia

Florida continues to shift. Central & Northern Florida will become challenging later in the week. Southern Georgia is trending the same.

Idaho

Potato shipments are up. Limited availability will persist throughout fall shipping season.

Midwest

Won’t gain coverage until fall commodities dwindle. Ohio right now is the best market. Wisconsin and Chicago are tightening.

New York

Consistent availability week to week. Upstate carriers will be more particular than the Hudson Valley.

Oregon/Washington

The Pacific Northwest continues to hold a limited status. Wouldn’t anticipate a shift anytime soon. Securing consistent carriers is expensive.

Texas

Dallas is slowly trying to improve, especially later in the week. South Texas will be more limited. Stable in all other areas.
