Overview & Projections
During the holiday week, shipping rates changed across the country. Several regions, including the Northeast, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest, saw higher than normal rate increases.
Washington and Oregon are entering their busy shipping season, which is making it harder to find available trucks. New York is experiencing similar challenges as their produce shipments increase. This week's activity will give us a good idea of where shipping rates might go in September.
The Contract Load Accepted Volume Index shows that shipping volumes are steadily increasing for the second half of this year. The holiday caused some disruption in the market, and more disruptions are possible. Hurricane season and increased container imports for the busy retail season could affect shipping in the coming months.
Arizona
Availability is prevalent. Capacity is holding strong as carriers outweigh outbound shipments.
California (Northern)
Carrier costs are holding steady in Northern and Central California. Potential shifts can still occur as OR tightens but currently nothing major.
California (Southern)
Also establishing stability which is a good sign. Coverage will enhance the further south you go. September is expected to follow this trend.
Carolinas
South Carolina is taking a step back this week. Won't be as plentiful but will return to normal soon. North Carolina will hold steady this month.
Eastern United States
No real change. Pennsylvania and New Jersey are constant week to week. Pittsburgh is the most reliable market.
Florida (Northern)
Atlanta is the only area differentiating. All other parts within Georgia and Florida are favorable. Quality opportunity to move freight.
Florida (Southern)
Carriers will move north for fall shipping. Any freight coming out will be sought after.
Georgia
Atlanta is the only area differentiating. All other parts within Georgia and Florida are favorable. Quality opportunity to move freight.
Idaho
Spot market is rising as peak shipping season arrives in the PNW.
Midwest
Chicago, Central Indiana, Southern Ohio, Southern Wisconsin and Western Michigan are the most demanding areas to secure trucks.
New York
Expect Upstate New York to present movement. Rates rose last week and will remain elevated.
Oregon/Washington
Southern Washington near Yakima and majority of OR will be challenging. Apple and cherry volumes are in full swing.
Texas
Dallas is sustaining the toughest market. Houston and South Texas rates are fair. Overall, recuperating.
